On being an artist
Being an Artist for me is freedom. Freedom to express myself through sculpture, oil painting, photography, drawing, and any other medium I find available. It also means wanting to walk my talk to the degree that "Starving Artist" no longer is a joke, but overnight could become a reality. Many people look at art as something "anybody" can do, and there is perhaps some merit in that type of thinking, but those of us who chose to make a living out of self expression struggle due to that attitude. I believe that true art lies in the talent to perform any God given gift in a way that uplifts humanity, and reflects the cosmic laws in action. In my way of looking at art, Steven Hawkins, Dr. Phil, Oprah, School Teachers, and anyone who performs their duty to the best of their ability is a true artist in their field. I don't understand how Art, (or Fine Art) can get so overlooked, with the ideas that "anyone" can make it. Basically, they can, but the artist who puts thought and energy into their work and then is not afraid to share the vulnerability with the world, is a true artist. There are many artists, many styles, many movements, many ways to express ourselves, so that nobody's ideas are left hanging. In fact, with the openness of the field, with something for everyone, it becomes hard to find an "original idea". Isn't it the same way with Steven Hawkins? The Universe smiles on those who do find a new way to express, shock, or otherwise get the attention of the masses. I am proud to be an artist, and do not feel like I need to compete with other artists. There is room for everyone who truely wants to continually expose their inner selves to the world in the manner of Fine Art. We are allowed the feedom to evolve and try new things, ideas, methods, and teachers. "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" so this leaves room for all who choose whatever field of expertise. Marketing art work is a whole different issue, and many times a difficult one for the artist who considers him/her self the one who just wants to perform the work, and live a life of freedom. Being an artist, really is work, draining the senses, and allowing a short space of time to recoop before going on to the next piece. Painting a complete work is no different than writing a novel, or any other work that includes concentration and focus.
As with any other profession, one has to grab those paints upon arising, and paint whether or not they want to. I send happiness and prosperity to all of us who decide to be Artists, God Bless us all!!! We need it!
